Greenwich Mencap scales up vital provision for the borough’s neurodivergent community
Healthwatch Greenwich recently met with Terri Looker, Chief Executive of Greenwich Mencap, to hear about the charity’s expanding programmes and the growing demand for specialist support. Our Neighbourhood Lead, Katie Haley, discussed how we can continue directing residents to services that build confidence, independence and wellbeing.
One area seeing significant interest is Greenwich Mencap’s Life Skills Centre, which offers practical sessions on personal care, confidence in the community, and healthy cooking. These workshops give people the tools to navigate daily life more independently — something many families tell us makes a meaningful difference.
Carers also have access to the Carers Medical & Home Support Service, a free offer designed to ease the pressure when supporting someone through hospital stays or medical appointments. This service provides hands‑on help so carers can look after their own health while continuing their caring responsibilities.
The Riverwood Project offers a welcoming, accessible space where people with learning disabilities and neurodivergence can take part in enjoyable activities, build friendships and explore new interests. It’s a vital source of social connection and confidence‑building.
Greenwich Mencap also provides welfare, housing and benefits advice, helping people understand their entitlements and navigate complex systems. Families and carers of children and young people — whether they have a diagnosis or are still seeking one — can access tailored guidance and emotional support.
These services offer clear pathways to practical help, community connection and greater independence.
How to access support:
