Building Communities That Recognise Carers
Unpaid carers are often described as the backbone of health and social care, yet many continue to feel invisible. This year's Carers Week theme, Building Carer Friendly Communities, focuses on ensuring carers are recognised, understood and supported in every aspect of daily life – from healthcare settings and workplaces to local neighbourhoods and community groups. Research released for Carers Week found that almost half of unpaid carers do not feel their role is understood or valued by their community.
Across Greenwich, thousands of people balance caring responsibilities alongside work, education, family life and their own wellbeing. Many do not identify themselves as carers, which can mean they miss out on support, advice and practical assistance that could make a significant difference.
Why Carer-Friendly Communities Matter
The challenges faced by unpaid carers extend beyond the caring role itself. Carers frequently report impacts on their health, finances, employment opportunities and social connections. National organisations behind Carers Week argue that communities work best when carers are identified early and are able to access support without having to navigate complex systems alone.
Creating carer-friendly communities means ensuring carers have a voice, are listened to by services and can access help when they need it. It also means recognising the contribution they make every day to families, communities and health services.
