Supporting Bengali Women to Improve Health and Wellbeing

Healthwatch Greenwich met with Bengali women in the community to understand their health priorities, share practical wellbeing guidance, and hear directly about the barriers they face when accessing primary care.

Exploring everyday health challenges

During a dedicated outreach session, Healthwatch Greenwich joined a group of Bengali women to discuss physical activity, nutrition, mental wellbeing and the support available in Greenwich. The conversation quickly moved beyond general advice, revealing how cultural expectations, longterm health conditions and daily responsibilities shape the way many women manage their health.

Women described how housework, childcare and gardening often exceed the recommended 150 minutes of weekly activity, yet pain, mobility issues and uncertainty about exercising safely can limit what they feel able to do. Questions about managing activity alongside chronic conditions highlighted the need for clearer, more personalised guidance from health professionals.

Discussions on food and nutrition showed similar complexity. While women recognised the value of balanced meals, many spoke about cultural eating patterns — such as large portions of rice and potatoes — and the challenge of adapting traditional recipes. Practical tips, including using the palm as a portion guide, choosing healthier oils and exploring airfrying, were well received. Interest in free community cooking classes suggested a strong appetite for handson support.

Understanding barriers to care

Mental wellbeing emerged as a shared concern, with women emphasising the importance of social connection, creative activities and peer support. Yet when the conversation turned to accessing GP services, significant barriers became clear. Many described difficulties navigating digital systems, unanswered phone calls and challenges receiving appointment links by email. These issues, which intensified after the pandemic, continue to limit access to timely care.

For people in Greenwich, these insights underline the importance of culturally aware services, accessible information and support that reflects reallife circumstances.
