Ten Years of Mockingbird: A Stronger Future for Foster Families in Greenwich

The Mockingbird Family Hub Model has reached its tenth year in Greenwich, marking a decade of peer‑led support that continues to transform the lives of foster families and the children they care for.

A community built on trust and shared experience

The Mockingbird Family Hub Model, first introduced in Greenwich in 2016, has grown into a network of five hubs supporting up to 18 children each. At its heart is a simple but powerful idea: foster families thrive when they are connected to one another. Experienced hub carers offer guidance, reassurance and practical help, creating a community where no foster carer feels they must navigate challenges alone.

Foster carers describe the network as “invaluable”, praising the emotional support, shared activities and safe spaces it provides. Sleepovers, regular meetups and peertopeer advice help children build trusted relationships and reduce feelings of isolation. For carers, the model offers a lifeline — a place to ask questions, share concerns and celebrate achievements with people who understand the realities of fostering.

From our perspective at Healthwatch Greenwich, this kind of communitydriven support is vital. When carers feel supported, children experience greater stability, and families are better able to access the health and care services they need.

Why this matters for Greenwich

The Mockingbird model strengthens the borough’s fostering community and improves outcomes for children who have often experienced trauma or instability. Carers told us how the hubs help them manage stress, navigate complex behaviours and maintain their own wellbeing — all of which directly influence how children engage with health, education and social care.

As the programme enters its next decade, its value is clear: strong networks create stronger futures.
