New life-saving health check programme in workplaces could save hundreds

On Friday, 30 August, the government announced the rollout of a life-saving health check programme in workplaces across the country. The new NHS Health Check programme will help protect people from diseases such as heart disease, kidney disease and diabetes.

The checks record a range of information about each patient and can be easily completed for employees at work. This information can then be used to determine cardiovascular risks.

Employers across a range of professions are participating in the programme, including those from the transport and social care sector. The new programme aims to identify early risk for people who are less likely to seek early help, and help to reduce waiting list times and free valuable appointment spaces in the NHS.

In addition, the government has announced the development of a new digital version of the NHS Health Check, which will be ready for testing early in 2025.

The service will be available through the NHS App, allowing users to undertake their health check at home and have the results automatically written back into their GP electronic health record with just a few clicks.

The digital programme will deliver around one million checks in its first 4 years. Plans are being put in place to make digital NHS Health Checks available nationally, alongside the face-to-face programme, to give patients more choice.
