Protecting Greenwich Children from Measles

Parents in Greenwich urged to check children’s vaccinations as measles cases rise in London and elsewhere in the UK
MMR Vaccine

Healthwatch Greenwich is encouraging parents and carers to check their child’s vaccination records and make sure they are fully protected with the MMR vaccine (measles, mumps and rubella). The reminder comes as parts of the UK continue to see an increase in measles cases, highlighting how quickly the virus can spread when vaccination rates drop.

Measles is one of the most infectious diseases and can spread easily in schools, nurseries and other community settings. While many children recover fully, the illness can sometimes lead to serious complications such as pneumonia, ear infections, and—in rare cases—swelling of the brain. Babies, young children, and people with weakened immune systems are especially vulnerable.

Across London, vaccination rates remain below the level needed to prevent outbreaks. The NHS recommends two doses of the MMR vaccine to provide the best possible protection. However, some children have missed one or both doses, often due to the disruption caused during the pandemic or families not realising that catch‑up appointments are still available.

Why the MMR vaccine matters

The MMR vaccine protects against three highly infectious illnesses:

Measles – can cause high fever, rash, pneumonia, seizures and, rarely, long‑term disability or death.

Mumps – may lead to swelling of the glands, meningitis, and possible hearing loss.

Rubella – usually mild in children but dangerous during pregnancy, as it can cause serious harm to unborn babies.

Children aged six or younger may also be offered the combined MMRV vaccine, which includes protection against:

Varicella (chickenpox) – often mild but can be more severe in babies and vulnerable children.

Two doses of MMR (or MMRV for eligible age groups) offer long-lasting protection and help stop outbreaks in schools and the wider community.

Catch‑up vaccinations available in Greenwich

If your child has missed a routine vaccination, it is not too late. Catch‑up appointments are available through GP practices across Greenwich, and many local clinics offer additional sessions during school holidays to make access easier for families.

You do not need to restart the vaccine course—children simply continue from the dose they last received.

How to check your child’s vaccination status

Parents and carers can:

Look in their child’s Red Book (Personal Child Health Record)

Contact their GP practice to confirm which vaccines have been given

Ask to book catch‑up MMR or MMRV vaccinations if any doses are missing

Local NHS teams are on hand to answer questions about safety, side effects, or the vaccination schedule. The MMR vaccine has been safely used for many years and remains one of the most effective ways to protect children against preventable illness.
