NHS Screening Programme – digital-first communications update

In 2025, the NHS started sending digital invitations, reminders and some results (login required) for the NHS Cervical and Bowel Screening Programme, using the NHS App.

Following positive user research, results requiring referral to colposcopy will also be available through the NHS App, meaning all cervical and Bowel screening communications will soon be available digitally.

Please do not get alarmed or confused if you receive any of these communications as NHS screening services gradually evolve into digital processes.

Pre‑invitations are now sent through the NHS App to people who have previously completed screening, making the process faster, more convenient and cost‑effective.

If a message isn’t read within 72 hours — or if digital delivery isn’t possible — a letter is sent as backup, with some people also receiving an NHSApp SMS alert. This digital shift improves data accuracy, reduces returned mail and supports quicker communication. Throughout 2026, digital screening services will continue to expand, creating a faster and more efficient system.
