New Centre Expands Community Mental Health Support
A Different Approach to Mental Health Care
The Heather Close Mental Health Centre has officially opened in Hither Green, marking a significant change in how mental health support is delivered locally. Led by South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust, the service is part of a national pilot programme designed to provide more joined-up care within communities rather than relying solely on hospital settings.
The centre offers access to mental health treatment, therapies, wellbeing services, crisis support and short-term guest beds for people who may need additional support for up to seven days. The aim is to ensure help is available closer to home and at the point it is needed.
Lewisham was selected by NHS England in 2024 as one of six areas testing this new model of care. The programme has been shaped through consultation with service users, carers, staff and community organisations, with a particular focus on improving access and delivering care that reflects the needs of diverse local communities.
Early results from the pilot have been encouraging. Health leaders report reductions in mental health-related visits to accident and emergency departments, fewer Community Treatment Orders and a decrease in detentions under the Mental Health Act.
Why This Matters
People living in Greenwich who receive services across south east London may see elements of this approach influence future mental health provision. The model places greater emphasis on community support, partnership working and earlier intervention, helping people access care before reaching crisis point.
The development also highlights the growing role of voluntary and community organisations in supporting mental health. More than £2 million has been invested in a Lewisham voluntary sector partnership to provide culturally appropriate support alongside NHS services.
