A Breakthrough Treatment Offering New Hope for Women with Ovarian Cancer

A new NHS-approved drug is set to extend the lives of women with hard‑to‑treat ovarian cancer, marking the most significant treatment advance in more than two decades.

Hundreds of women across England will now have access to mirvetuximab soravtansine, a targeted therapy designed for ovarian, peritoneal, or fallopian tube cancers that no longer respond to platinumbased chemotherapy. This development follows a strong recommendation from NICE and represents a major shift in how advanced ovarian cancer can be managed.

A New Era in Targeted Cancer Treatment

Mirvetuximab soravtansine works by homing in on cancer cells that carry the folate receptor alpha (FRα) protein. Once attached, it delivers a cancerkilling agent directly into the tumour cell — a precision approach often described as a “biological missile”. Clinical trials involving NHS hospitals showed that patients lived an average of 16.5 months on the treatment, compared with 12.8 months on standard chemotherapy. Many also experienced fewer side effects, allowing them to maintain daily routines, travel, and spend meaningful time with loved ones.

For people in Greenwich, this means access to a treatment that can offer more time, better quality of life, and a realistic alternative when chemotherapy is no longer effective. It also highlights the importance of early conversations with clinicians about eligibility for new therapies.

What This Means for Local Care and Support

The treatment will be delivered intravenously every three weeks at specialist cancer centres. Those eligible will be referred by their oncology team, ensuring they receive care in settings equipped to provide advanced anticancer therapies.
