Precision Radiotherapy Set to Transform Prostate Cancer Treatment in Greenwich
Thousands of men diagnosed with early‑stage prostate cancer will soon have access to stereotactic ablative radiotherapy (SABR), a highly targeted treatment that delivers powerful radiation doses with exceptional accuracy. This marks a major shift in prostate cancer care, offering faster treatment with fewer hospital visits and improved long‑term outcomes.
A Faster, More Accurate Approach to Treatment
SABR uses multiple finely targeted beams of radiation delivered from different angles, converging precisely on the tumour. This allows clinicians to administer a higher dose directly to cancer cells while protecting surrounding healthy tissue. The result is a reduced risk of side effects and a lower chance of the cancer returning or spreading.
Traditional radiotherapy often requires at least 20 sessions over several weeks. SABR can be completed in just five sessions over two weeks, significantly reducing travel time, disruption to daily life, and pressure on NHS services. For people in Greenwich, this means quicker access to cutting‑edge treatment that supports better outcomes and allows individuals to maintain more of their normal routines during care.
What This Means for Local Cancer Care
Prostate cancer is the most common cancer affecting men in the UK, with more than 55,000 diagnoses each year. Around 17,500 men annually are diagnosed with low or intermediate‑risk prostate cancer and may be eligible for SABR. NHS modelling suggests around 3,500 men could choose this new therapy each year.
The treatment will be available across all 48 radiotherapy centres in England, supported by investment in new linear accelerator machines that enable more powerful and precise cancer care.
