Hui's story: "Working with Healthwatch Greenwich has strengthened my commitment to uplifting and empowering people's experiences and voices"
I joined Healthwatch Greenwich at the end of April 2024 through an internship opportunity offered at the University of Greenwich. After seeing the advertisement, I thought I would apply and give it a go. A short while after I applied, I was ecstatic to learn that I had been invited for an interview and later got the position!
On my first day, I immediately felt welcomed and quickly became part of the team. I had originally taken up the position to gain professional skills and learn the day-to-day functioning of a health organisation. However, what I experienced far exceeded my expectations. Not only was I able to grow my experience in the different facets of running a health organisation but I was able to support various community projects.
My highlight was being able to support co-production projects led by the research team. I was given the responsibility of screening residents interested in taking part in our projects, as well as assisting with organising workshops with community members at the Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust. I felt a great sense of satisfaction being able to see these projects grow and be delivered to community members and external stakeholders.
Additionally, I was able to take part in the Healthwatch Greenwich befriending service. Alongside Kiki, I supported socially isolated residents in the borough, including visiting residents in their homes and speaking to them about their experiences to improve their mental health.
It was through this project that I could truly see the difference the team was able to make in our community.
Through my internship experience, I have gained vital skills that have since helped me in both my professional and educational development. I am currently working part-time in a mental health setting and am now pursuing my postgraduate degree in Psychology and mental health.
Working with Healthwatch Greenwich has strengthened my commitment to uplifting and empowering people's experiences and voices, especially those who are seldom heard and making sure their voices are at the forefront of our healthcare system.
Thank you to everyone at Healthwatch Greenwich for this opportunity and for helping me to have such a positive internship experience!
