Connecting with Future Changemakers at the UEL Careers Fair
Recently, Healthwatch Greenwich took part in the University of East London (UEL) Careers Fair at the Docklands Campus — a lively and inspiring event that brought together students from a wide range of courses and backgrounds. Throughout the day, we spoke with students about our role in championing the voices of local people and ensuring their experiences shape improvements across NHS and social care services.
What we Observed
Many students were keen to understand how community feedback influences real change. We discussed how lived experience helps identify gaps, highlight good practice, and guide decision‑makers toward more accessible, person‑centred care. It was encouraging to see so much interest in health and social care, advocacy, public health, psychology, and community engagement.
Volunteering was a major theme of the day. Students were eager to learn how they could get involved — from supporting outreach and engagement to helping gather feedback in local communities. We also spoke about the skills they can develop with us, including communication, research, teamwork, and confidence in working with diverse groups.
Feedback from Participants
Two students shared reflections that captured the spirit of the day:
“I didn’t realise how much community voices shape the NHS — it made me want to get involved.” Kimberly*
Another participant said...
“Volunteering with Healthwatch feels like a real way to make a difference, even as a student.” Kris*
We’re grateful to UEL for hosting such a well‑organised event and to every student who took the time to stop by our stand. Their enthusiasm and curiosity were a reminder of how important it is to involve the next generation in shaping the future of health and care in Greenwich.
