"Healthwatch Greenwich introduced me to the idea that health support goes beyond individual medical appointments; it encompasses supporting individuals and their families, health choices, and communities, creating spaces where help is accessible by all"

Abby Thomas, a Healthwatch Greenwich intern, shares her journey contributing to the work at Healthwatch Greenwich and helping to strengthen local health and care services.

As an American psychology student, I have known for many years that studying abroad was something I wanted to pursue. Seeking new opportunities for personal growth, I believe, can also enhance my understanding within my chosen field. Therefore, when the time came to plan my experience in London, I realised that an internship abroad would provide me with the chance to learn about helping people from a new perspective.

I initially felt that Healthwatch Greenwich would be the perfect place for this experience. At its core, Healthwatch Greenwich is dedicated to listening to and assisting people.

After working with the team for the past six weeks, I am fortunate to say that this experience has reinforced my own values of listening and helping.

Healthwatch’s commitment to supporting community health emphasises the importance of creating a network of support beyond just family, friends, and healthcare professionals.

One of the biggest challenges I faced during my internship was understanding the healthcare system in the UK. The differences between the NHS and the healthcare system in the United States prompted me to recognise new perspectives and approaches to health support. Healthwatch Greenwich introduced me to the idea that health support goes beyond individual medical appointments; it encompasses supporting individuals and their families, health choices, and communities, thus creating a space where help is accessible to all. This community-based approach to healthcare highlighted the isolation people often feel when dealing with health issues without community support, a situation that is especially evident in countries lacking national health services.

I was particularly inspired by the people at Healthwatch Greenwich. The team consists of some of the most dedicated and driven individuals I have ever encountered. Their compassion for the community is matched by their commitment to improving the well-being of Greenwich residents.

Over the course of six weeks, I observed these remarkable women go out of their way to assist groups facing challenges such as language barriers, accessibility issues, and systemic inequalities.

There are not enough kind words to express my appreciation for Healthwatch Greenwich. Six weeks ago, I felt anxious about being unprepared but the team welcomed me with open arms and equipped me with everything I needed to succeed. Because of their guidance and support, I now feel comfortable taking the initiative and asking questions in the workplace.
